Liver spots are also known as chloasma, which refers to the brownish patches that develop on the skin due to an increase in melanin production. These spots are commonly associated with aging and sun exposure, appearing primarily on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight, such as the face, hands, and arms. Though often referred to interchangeably with terms like hyperpigmentation or melasma, chloasma specifically denotes the type of pigmentary condition that occurs predominantly in certain populations and is often exacerbated by hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or as a side effect of hormonal therapies. Recognizing the specificity of chloasma helps in distinguishing it from other forms of skin pigmentation.
